Guide to Dog Grooming at Home: Tools, Tips & Tricks
Welcome back everyone, hope all is going well with you and your dog, I have written before about how much our dogs just love life and part of that is the great outside world. Whether that be what I call a “dry walk” or the one most dogs like which is a “wet walk” rivers, sea side trips or just muddy wet fields. From my experience this leaves us all with an issue and whether looking after your dog post walkies or just some grooming tips we have a number of things to consider. Here is a short guide what could help with looking after your dog, don’t forget that we at 4 Paws Yorkshire can help with our 100% quality waterproof blankets.
Brushing techniques: With long/curly coat we should use a slicker brush, see a guide to some good brushes, it is advised to use an undercoat rake for double-coated breeds to remove loose fur and this should be done 2 or 3 times a week.
Ears and eye safety: We really have a problem with Poppy, her eyes and ears need regular attention. We use an off the shelf solution, here is an ear cleaning solution for their ears used with cotton wool, its seems to work really well and we do this at least once a week, careful not to go to deep though. Additionally, we also do her eyes with clean cloth and warm clean water wiping her eyes, much the same as you would do with a baby working away from the eyes.
Bathing your dog: Always brush out your dogs coat first this will help with removing any loose hair or dirt. Use a good PH balanced shampoo, makes sure that you rinse your dog well to get out all the shampoo. Trying making bath time fun for your dog, in particular with the shower head. Top tip, watch out for the shake off’s…..several times………doesn’t matter how many times you dry them.
If your dog doesn’t like bath time; not all dogs do, if yours doesn’t, here are some tips and tricks to help. Try using a non-slip bath mat like this one and have some treats available, positive reinforcement can help dogs to see bath time as a good thing. Keep them on a lead, you can control them better and it gives them a sense of security.
