Useful tips for training your dog

Hello and welcome back,

This week I have been thinking about what sort of training I did with my dogs and did it work. Well as they are now getting older the training seems to be fading and whether they are getting deaf or just not bothering to respond to commands I am not sure. Any way here are five interesting and maybe useful tips for training your dog.

  • Positive reinforcement this must be one of the easiest ways to begin with, repetition is one thing your dog will understand. Doing my degree lent quite a bit on Phycology and in particular the “Pavlov Dogs” experiment, whereby every time they rang a bell they would feed the dogs. Eventually the dogs began salivating every time the bell was rung regardless of if there was food or not.

  • Training on a Leash It is safe to begin training your dog on the leash as soon as you get them, even as a puppy. Just remember that Puppies will need a gentle leader to start with but the sooner you get going the better experience it will be for both of you.
  •  Short sessions You will obviously be keen to get your dog trained for a whole host of reasons no least…..house training….one tip is keep the session short and repetitive to start with, you will need a lot of patience and don’t forget positive reinforcement.

  • Recall  Can be one of the most frustrating things for a dog owner being able to in still that recall in your pet is vital. Most trainers recommend using the term “Come here” and without doubt positive reinforcement with treats is a real winner.

Tips: Choose a time when you think there will be no distractions, start with basic      commands, repeat, reinforce and above all be patient.

I hope this has been a little informative, I hope one day but not yet to be able to use these again and who knows I might even do a better job.

Anyway keep safe and enjoy your dog
