Our dogs are ageing

Hello dog lovers,

As you know our dogs are ageing, in fact Poppy had her 13 birthday yesterday and of course it was Easter Sunday. Everybody was tucking into their Easter eggs but poor old Holly and Poppy had to miss out for obviously reasons, however, I did make them a special breakfast of scrambled eggs and they loved it. Although dogs are not allowed human chocolate they can have dog chocolate we have linked a speciality dog chocolate supplier for you.  For some reason Holly is always active after eating and she will usually bring me her Kong and I thought for this week’s blog I might look at what our dogs respond best to inside and out doors. If you are wondering what you can and cannot feed your dog, please checkout this nutrition guide from pets at home.

  • Secent and smell: Without doubt and in my experience, Holly’s favourite toy is her Kong, Poppy isn’t interested, but put two dog biscuit in the toy and that will keep her going for 10-15 minutes sending it end over end until she gets her reward and she always does…………why is this so popular......scent and smell are a great driving force for our pets and in this case the need to uncover what is inside is overwhelming. If you are interested in a getting a kong for your dog please check the kong company linked.

  • Texture and Feel: We know dogs have different types of mouths, they have been bread over hundreds of years for a variety of jobs and this has literally shaped their mouths. So its not surprising to find out that dogs do have, so gun dog types might like soft textures other dogs may like firmer textures. Whatever happens they will almost certainly let you know which their favourite is. As a puppy Poppy always loved the noisey soft toys. We don’t see her with them so much now.

  • Throw and retrieve:  I don’t need to introduce this as it is is a main staple for fun for all our dogs, again, breeding has really played an important part in the activity and while we don’t always realise it, subconsciously we are bonding with our dogs. The simplest ball throwing and retrieving is so satisfying for our pets that will do it time and time again, I don’t know who is having more fun especially if it is in water. If you are looking for dog walks to visit in Yorkshire please check out our blog on this
